Smart Card Alliance – NFC Non-Payments Use Cases

Near Field Communications (NFC) technology gets a lot of attention for its ability to enable contactless payments, but less known is that it also can be used to enable secure and convenient transactions in non-payments applications, such as marketing, identity, access, ticketing and gaming. The Smart Card Alliance recently released a white paper that explores non-payments NFC implementations that are breaking new ground, and the security approaches that are being used to protect sensitive user credentials within NFC applications.

“With 2 billion NFC devices estimated to be in the market by the end of 2016, now is the time to take advantage of the exciting opportunities that NFC provides for all types of secure, convenient transactions,” said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance. “Readers of this white paper will come away with a thorough understanding of what the possibilities are for non-payment NFC applications, and will better understand the security and implementation approaches that are bringing NFC technology to hundreds of millions of new users.”

The white paper discusses the following topics in detail:

  • Non-payment use cases, including:
    • Marketing, including loyalty, coupons and offers
    • Identity and access, including hospitality, boarding passes, physical access control, automotive and healthcare
    • Ticketing, including transit and event ticketing
    • Gaming
  • Implementation considerations, challenges and examples of real-world implementations for each use case
  • Approaches for securing sensitive user credentials for non-payment applications
  • Implementation challenges that are common to all non-payments use cases

This white paper was created by the Smart Card Alliance’s Mobile and NFC Council. Participants involved in the development of this white paper included: Advanced Card Systems Ltd.; Booz Allen Hamilton; Capgemini Financial Services; CH2M; Consult Hyperion; CPI Card Group; Cubic Transportation Systems; Discover Financial Services; First Data; Hewlett Packard Enterprise; Identification Technology Partners; Initiative for Open Authentication (OATH); IQ Devices; MasterCard; NXP Semiconductors; TSYS; Underwriters Laboratories (UL); Verifone; Visa Inc.; Wells Fargo; Xerox.
